When to charge by the hour

Years ago I had an agency client give me some advice about when to charge hourly vs a fixed bid:

Only give a fixed bid if the chance that the project spec will change while you’re working on it is low.

This piece of advice has helped me a lot over the years. If the project duration is short and the spec is constrained enough, a fixed quote fits. Seth Godin has similar advice but with 3x the examples in When to charge by the hour.
